About the Author

Lisa Takeuchi Cullen is a New York–based staff writer for Time magazine. She joined the magazine in 2001 as a Tokyo correspondent. Cullen received an International Reporting Project fellowship to Japan in 2000, where she studied the changing role of women. From 1997 to 2001, she was a staff writer for Money magazine in New York. She has previously worked as an editor or reporter at Financial Planning, The Resident, Ladies' Home Journal and Adweek. She has contributed articles to The New York Times and Bon Appétit, among other publications. She is a graduate of Canadian Academy International School (Kobe, Japan), Rutgers College (New Brunswick, N.J.) and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (New York City). Cullen was born and raised in Kobe, Japan; she currently lives in New Jersey with her husband Chris, their daughter Mika and their basset hound Hoover.
